The goal of the project is to collect data and detailed information on scientific collaboration between scientists Croatia-USA, Croatia-Germany and Croatia - AF/AS/LA (Africa/Asia/Latin America) in the period 1963-today, and on this basis to obtain scientific evaluation of the scope, effects and importance of this international collaboration. In particular, the following points will be investigated: a) The structure of these international scientific collaborations according to the fields of science, scope and efficiency of different channels of official and individual scientific collaboration, time scale, participating scientists and participating institutions; b) List of joint scientific publications; c) Main scientific achievements of these scientific collaborations; d) The impact of USA-Croatia, Germany-Croatia and AF/AS/LA-Croatia scientific collaboration on the technological development of Croatia; d) The role of this international scientific collaboration on development and performance of Croatian science and in particular on strives towards scientific and professional excellence; e) The role of this scientific collaboration in promoting mutual understanding between countries and nations.
The work on the project is planned in four stages: i) The questionnaires on US-Croatia, Germany-Croatia and AF/AS/LA - Croatia will be sent to 3600 Croatian scientists (all scientists at the level of research associate / assistant professor or higher) and the following information will be collected and systematized: list of scientific publications in international scientific journals published in coauthorship of Croatian and foreign scientists; list of scientific publications in books published in coauthorship of Croatian and foreign scientists; list of abstracts of Conference proceedings published in coauthorship of Croatian and foreign scientists; list of Croatian coauthors and institutions; list of coauthors and collaborating institutions from USA, Germany and AF/AS/LA countries; main scientific achievements of scientific projects on which the Croatian scientists have collaborated with scientists from USA, Germany and AF/AS/LA on official or individual basis (not recorded by official contracts); membership of Croatian scientists in scientific and professional associations in USA, Germany and AF/AS/LA. (As to the size of the body of data a preliminary estimate was obtained in the preparation of the project proposal with respect to only one of the indicators: the total number of scientific publications in coauthorship of Croatian scientists and scientists from USA, Germany and AS/AF/LA is estimated at approximately 6.000). The summary computer data files will be created with all relevant information. Judgement, ideas and suggestions on the impact of this collaboration in development and performance of science in Croatia will be investigated analyzed and summarily presented. This investigation is expected to show a detailed evidence of the role and importance of international collaboration for Croatian science, and display its structure according to different elements. This will provide useful information for evaluation of the international character of Croatian science as well as for further incorporation of Croatian science into international framework, as an important factor of scientific and technological development of Croatia.
The expected outputs of the project are:
edited by V.Paar et al., (Skolska knjiga, Zagreb 1995), 558 pages. This book presents detailed information on scientific cooperation between scientists from Croatia and USA over the period 1963-1993, and in particular: the list of 2,203 scientific publications published in coauthorship of Croatian and American scientists, list of 705 Croatian and 1,461 American collaborating scientists, list of 102 Croatian and 615 American collaborating institutions, description of main scientific achievements of scientific cooperation, list of joint scientific projects and list of memberships of Croatian scientists in scientific and professional associations in USA. Also, some of the Croatian scientists with outstanding results of cooperation with American scientists, have presented their personal views on the impact of the US science on scientific and technological development and performance of various fields of science in Croatia. In addition, various distributions obtained by performing computer analysis of data are presented, as for example, distributions of participating scientists in institutions, field distributions of participating scientists and joint publications, the four year period distributions according to scientific fields, annual distributions of publications, frequency distributions for Croatian and American coauthors, etc.
